Managers, Firefighters and Exiles

Here’s a more detailed distinction of the three types of parts in IFS: Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles. These inner parts with their dynamics play a crucial role in our emotional lives, and understanding them is a key step toward personal growth and healing. To dive deeper into the details of Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles and how they interact within our inner world, continue reading below.

Here's a breakdown of the three types of parts in IFS:
  • Managers: These parts often take on a proactive role. They work to maintain control, avoid triggers, and prevent the activation of Exiles. Managers might manifest as perfectionism, self-criticism, or an overachieving attitude. You might feel the presence of Managers as inner pressure to excel, perfectionism, or a sense of responsibility. They may manifest as persistent thoughts or beliefs about what you should do or how you should behave.

    Common Managers:
Perfectionist, Control, Caretaker, Responsibility, Critic, Planner, Avoidance, Intellectualizing, Guardian, Judge
  • Firefighters: Firefighters are reactive parts that emerge when Exiles are activated and intense emotions surface. They aim to quickly extinguish or distract from the emotional pain through impulsive behaviors, such as overeating, substance use, self-harm, or other coping mechanisms. Firefighters tend to manifest as impulsive actions or behaviors during moments of emotional distress. These can include sudden outbursts of anger, binge eating, substance abuse, or self-harm. The urge to engage in these behaviors can be overwhelming.

    Common Firefighters:
Substance Abuse, Self-Harm, Binge Eating, Impulsive Spending, Risky Behaviors, Dissociation, Excessive Busyness, Isolation, Anger Outbursts, Self-Criticism
  • Exiles: Exiles are the parts that hold the emotional pain or traumatic memories. They are typically experienced as deep emotional wounds or vulnerability. These parts are often hidden or suppressed by Managers and protected from the outside world by Firefighters. Exiles are often felt as deep emotional pain, sadness, shame, fear, or other intense feelings. These emotions can be triggered by specific events or situations, and they may also surface during therapy or moments of vulnerability.

It’s important to note that these distinctions are not always rigid, and parts can sometimes shift between these roles based on the situation or individual experiences. The goal of IFS therapy is to create harmony among these parts, allowing for healing and integration so that Exiles can be heard, acknowledged, and healed in a safe and nurturing way.
