Understanding the Self -
The Core of Your Inner Harmony

In the transformative journey of Internal Family Systems (IFS), understanding the concept of the “Self” is pivotal. The Self isn’t just another part of you; it is the compassionate center of your being, essential for leading and healing the various parts of your internal system. Let’s explore what the Self is, the nature of Self energy, how to recognize when you are in Self energy, and how it facilitates parts work.

What is the Self?

In IFS, the Self is your core essence, distinct from the parts (such as Managers, Firefighters, and Exiles) that carry burdens and manage your daily life and emotions. The Self is characterized by its eight qualities: calmness, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, creativity, courage, and connectedness—often referred to as the “8 Cs.” These qualities inherently exist in everyone and are not damaged or diminished by life experiences.

What is Self Energy?

Self energy refers to the state when these 8 Cs are active and guiding your thoughts and actions. It is the energy you embody when you are not overwhelmed by parts or their burdens. Self energy is healing and allows you to approach your parts and their issues without judgment, enabling an environment where healing and balance can occur.

Recognizing Self Energy:

You know you are experiencing Self energy when you feel more grounded, present, and balanced. It often manifests as a sense of being at peace with yourself and your surroundings, even amid conflict or stress. Common indicators include:

  • Feeling open and accepting of all experiences without the urge to immediately react.
  • An increase in understanding and empathy towards yourself and others.
  • A decrease in impulsivity, with responses coming from a place of calmness and thoughtfulness.

Self Energy in Parts Work:

Self energy is crucial in parts work because it acts as a compassionate leader that can understand, negotiate, and heal the parts. With Self at the lead, parts feel safe to step back from extreme roles they’ve taken on. Here’s how it helps:

  • Healing: Self energy can reach out to wounded parts (especially Exiles) and offer the validation and care they need to heal.
  • Unburdening: By bringing Self qualities to interactions with burdened parts, you facilitate a process where these parts can let go of their painful beliefs and emotions.
  • Harmonizing: Self energy helps balance the system, ensuring no part is over-functioning or under-functioning. This harmony reduces internal conflicts and promotes a sense of overall well-being.

What Else is Worth Mentioning?

  • Accessibility: Even if Self energy feels distant, it’s always present and can be accessed by focusing inward and seeking spaces of calm and curiosity.
  • Role in Daily Life: Regularly tapping into Self energy can improve decision-making, enhance relationships, and increase resilience against stress.
  • Cultivating Self Energy: Practices like meditation, mindfulness, and therapy can help cultivate and maintain access to Self energy, making it easier to engage with daily.

Wrapping Up:

The Self in IFS is not just a concept but a powerful presence within every person, capable of leading their internal system with wisdom and kindness. Recognizing and nurturing your Self energy can transform the way you handle internal conflicts and challenges, leading to profound personal growth and harmony.
